The Granby Charter Day XC Races went off under cloudy skies and high humidity. It felt cool until we started racing. The first field was a grassy black mud bog, which everyone loved, unless
they had new running shoes they wanted to keep clean and dry. Hey, it's cross-country!
This was the first year with the new starting location, which is at the baseball backstop at the far Taylor St end of the park, past all the rides.
Racers were allowed to park right in the first field, by turning immediately into it, as soon as they turned onto Kendall St. The 5K race is still on the Granby
High School XC course, but now it starts at the 1-mile point, and runs mile 2, mile 3, then mile 1. This allows Charter Day vehicular traffic to continue to flow at all times, which was a point
of contention in the past. That problem is solved, quite handily.
In the Kids 1-mile XC race, Alex Neilen led from wire to wire. The kids were paced by Felicia Cordeiro from our high school XC team. Coach Bill also tried to keep up,
but decided his best role was to direct some of the younger athletes further back in the pack, such as Evan Adeletti, age 4, who ran a very respectable 10:12 for the mile!
For the girls, Erica Lempke ran a quick 8:33 for the mile, beating Fiona Bernadin.
In the adult 5K, Alex Neilen went again, and although he didn't win the 5K like he did the mile, he did come in 8th! Pretty amazing!
Some of the runners managed to miss the "best" part of the 5K course, our killer hill. The course was marked with color-coded 5K signs, but only 2 colors were used.
Apparently, 3 colors are needed, and we will do this next year and thereafter. When the order of the miles was changed, it caused the runners to have to run around the final
field twice in succession, whereas in the past, they ran around it once in the beginning of the race, and then again at the end of the race. I missed that problem.
Because of this, time adjustments were made, and places were changed accordingly. The 4th place finisher was Mary Mancuso. The next person to run the big hill was Billy Dean,
and his time was 2:03 after Mary's. Therefore, that amount of time was added to the 6th through 8th runners, moving them all to later places.
Therefore, the adjusted 5K results show Brendan Dean running away with 1st prize for the men, while Mary Mancuso did the same for the women. They both ran up our killer hill.
Likewise, 2nd places went to Billy Dean and Felicia Cordeiro, if you don't count runners who didn't run the whole course.
Gary Neilen and Bob Massaro raced remarkably well, winning their age categories, as did Laurie Addoms, Tricia Roy, and Jessica Weglarz.
There were cash prizes for the overall race winners and also for age category winners, but many of the winners refused to accept their prizes, that is to say, they decided to
donate their winnings to the cause of supporting running, particularly track and cross-country, in Granby. Thanks to all! Everyone ran great, and everyone was a good sport!
See you in 2008, same time, same station! Thanks again, Coach Bill
